The Wine Trail of Grand River Valley, Ohio
The Grand River Valley wine region of Ohio is an ideal destination for a long weekend getaway or a day trip if you’re in the area. Nestled in Ashtabula County, this picturesque area boasts more than 40 wineries, making it a haven for wine lovers. Beyond the vineyards, visitors can explore 19 historic covered bridges—including the longest in the United States—hike through 12 open parks and trails, or enjoy water activities on the Grand River and Lake Erie.
Given the region’s rich viticultural history dating back to the 1800s, it’s no surprise that over 50% of Ohio’s grapes are grown here. Today, Grand River Valley has more wineries per square mile than any other area in the state, offering a diverse mix of boutique, family-run operations and larger estates. Debonné Vineyards in Madison holds the distinction of being Ohio’s largest estate winery. The wineries are not far apart, which allows easy exploration and a spectrum of tasting experiences, from casual, rustic charm to sophisticated elegance.
Award-Winning Varietals
Due to rich soil and Lake Erie’s moderating effect, the region enjoys a cool climate ideal for growing world-class white varietals. Riesling, Chardonnay, Pinot Gris, and Vidal Blanc thrive here, producing crisp, aromatic wines with excellent acidity and balance.
In recent years, red wines from the Grand River Valley have been turning heads. Cabernet Franc, Chambourcin, and Pinot Noir are now regularly earning industry accolades, proving that Ohio’s terroir can produce expressive, high-quality reds. The region has also been internationally recognized for its notable sparkling and ice wines, a specialty crafted from grapes naturally frozen on the vine to yield a concentrated, sweet, and complex dessert wine.
